MEPs vote for Novel Foods Report

Members of the European Parliament's environment committee voted for the co-decision report on novel foods, drafted by MEP Kartika Liotard, today. The report is based on the Commission's proposal which revises the current Novel Foods Regulation (EC) No 258/97. With 42 votes in favour, 2 against and 3 abstentions, the MEPs voted to exclude food derived from cloned animals, and to have this dealt with in a separate piece of legislation, introduced a risk assessment for nanotech food and a procedure whereby the ethical and environmental implications of a Novel food is assessed by the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies. This report will be voted on by the whole European Parliament in July, date to be confirmed.
